City improvements, regional investment and local business success Many of you will be aware of roadworks in the city centre as we carry out significant maintenance and improvements to travel options in Manvers Street and Bridge Street. I want to take a moment to acknowledge the disruption road closures make. I know that for many people – whether you are commuting, running a business, or simply trying to get around the city – delays, diversions and changes to bus services can be frustrating. These works are not being undertaken lightly. Manvers Street in particular sits above historic vaults and ageing infrastructure that has deteriorated over time, and this project is essential to ensure the long-term safety and resilience of one of our city’s key routes. By carrying out these improvements now, we are making a long-term investment in Bath’s infrastructure – reducing the risk of more serious failures in the future and avoiding the kind of emergency repairs that would cause far greater disruption. Alongside this, we are taking the opportunity to upgrade utilities, improve footways and ensure the road is fit for modern traffic demands. Our ambitious programme of highways improvements across Bath and North East Somerset, when complete, will see safer streets, better walking, wheeling and cycling routes and cleaner air which will provide long-term benefits for all our communities Please be assured we are working closely with contractors and partners to minimise disruption as far as possible and to keep people informed, and I would encourage everyone to plan ahead and consider using Park & Ride and other travel options where they can. Tomorrow I will be attending a meeting of the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority (WECA), where we continue to work with partners across the region to secure investment and opportunities for Bath and North East Somerset. Our involvement in WECA is vital in helping us attract funding for infrastructure, transport and economic growth, ensuring our area continues to thrive as part of a strong and connected regional economy. One of the decisions we are being asked to approve tomorrow is a much-needed £5million Nature Fund which will deliver projects that reverse biodiversity decline, connect habitats, help us all connect more with nature – essential work to ensure nature recovery goes hand in hand with the region’s growth. On Monday, I was delighted to attend the Bath Dragons event, where entrepreneurs from across our area showcased their innovation and ambition. Congratulations to Jessica Langford-Snape (pictured) and Wild Flour Cake Co Ltd on winning this year’s award – a fantastic achievement and a testament to the creativity and talent we have here in B&NES. Our area is home to a thriving community of independent businesses, from makers and food producers to retailers and service providers, all contributing to the unique character and success of our high streets and local economy. It is always inspiring to see that entrepreneurial spirit in action, and I am proud of the role the council plays in supporting businesses across Bath & North East Somerset. Finally, huge congratulations to Writhlington School's recent gold medal win at the Chelsea Flower Show as part of their longstanding Orchid Project - an amazing achievement. Have a good weekend.
