Focusing on prevention Much of what the council does is about stepping in early and helping create the conditions for people to live healthier, safer and happier lives. Prevention can take many forms. It might be support for families before they reach crisis, helping people stay independent for longer, or investing in our roads and buildings. Often this work goes unseen – but it makes a real difference to people’s lives and to the long-term resilience of our area. A very recent example of protection and prevention is the vital work carried out by our Trading Standards team. Last week, a builder who defrauded a vulnerable resident was jailed following a detailed investigation led by the council. This case was about more than bringing one individual to justice. It showed our determination to protect people from rogue traders, and to send a strong message that we will pursue traders who breach the law. Prevention is also central to the significant investment we are about to undertake in Manvers Street. While it can be tempting to focus only on what is visible, much of this project is about protecting what lies underneath. We are well aware that a lengthy and complex project like this will have an impact and we will do our best to reduce disruption. By investing now, we are reducing the risk of emergency repairs in the future, helping to avoid unplanned disruption and ensuring Manvers Street can continue to support the city centre, public transport and local businesses. Of course, improving people’s lives isn’t only about infrastructure and enforcement. It’s also about the places that bring us together, support our wellbeing and make our area such a special place to live. That’s why I was delighted to see Bath topping Time Out’s Best Green City list for green space and nature, with a 94% approval rating. It follows the guide’s recent recognition of Bath as one of the world’s top 50 cities. This Saturday is World Heritage Day, a perfect moment to reflect on the extraordinary heritage we are so lucky to have across Bath & North East Somerset and as a twice listed UNESCO World Heritage Site. Whether it’s protecting vulnerable residents, investing in infrastructure, caring for green spaces or looking after our remarkable heritage, prevention runs through everything we do as a council. Have a good weekend. Councillor Kevin Guy, Leader of Bath & North East Somerset Council |
