Climate change impact and championing the Rivers Avon, Chew and Frome Like many of you, I have been shocked by the images we've seen in recent weeks of devastating wildfires across Wales, in Suffolk and parts of Europe, particularly France and Spain. Entire landscapes have been scorched, communities displaced and emergency services stretched to their limits. The Environment Agency (EA) has also confirmed more than half of England including the South West has met drought conditions. These events are a stark reminder that climate change is not a distant threat. The impacts are being felt now, here in the UK and across the world, through more extreme weather, rising temperatures and increased risks to people, wildlife and the places we love. That's why tackling the climate and nature emergency remains one of Bath & North East Somerset Council's highest priorities. We're continuing to invest in projects that reduce carbon emissions, strengthen nature recovery and help our communities become more resilient to a changing climate. While these challenges can sometimes feel overwhelming, there is also hope in the action that local communities, organisations and councils can take together. I would encourage everyone to watch or host a screening of the People's Emergency Briefing, which sets out the reality of the challenges we face and, importantly, the practical steps we can all take to be part of the solution. With the recent hot and dry weather and wild fires in also impacting parts of the UK, I'd also like to remind residents not to have barbecues and open fires in our public parks, open spaces and open countryside areas. Even a small spark can quickly lead to a serious fire, putting people, homes, wildlife and emergency services at risk. Thank you for helping to keep our communities and green spaces safe. On a more positive note, we've had some fantastic feedback following the council's decision to sign up to the Avon Bioregion Charter for Rights. The River Avon has shaped our area, but it is not the only watercourse that matters. Rivers such as the Chew and the Frome are vital to the health of our natural environment, supporting wildlife, providing habitats, contributing to our local landscape and helping communities connect with nature. Protecting these precious waterways is an important part of our wider commitment to nature recovery and environmental stewardship. Have a great weekend Councillor Sarah Warren,
