Christmas at the Roman Baths and Pump Room

Date published: 2022-11-18 | Category: Leisure, Tourism and Heritage

Christmas at the Roman Baths, with Bath Abbey in the background

With the Christmas holidays fast approaching, the Roman Baths and Pump Room is getting festive with a host of seasonal food and drink, Christmas shopping and family activities.

Warm up with a hot chocolate or mulled wine from the pop-up bar beside the Great Bath, make a Roman-style decoration at the family craft session, or shop for Christmas presents with a Roman or Georgian flavour in the Roman Baths Shop.

The Pump Room Restaurant will offer a variety of seasonal dining options, from Festive Evening Dining by Candlelight to takeaway ‘Stew in a Box’ from the Christmas Market chalet.

Kevin Guy, Leader of Bath & North East Somerset Council, said: “Bath has a wonderful atmosphere in the run-up to Christmas, with the famous Christmas Market and Christmas Light Trail turning the city centre into a magical winter destination. The Roman Baths and Pump Room will be no exception, with an array of festive things to see and do, eat and drink.”

Pop-up bar at the Roman Baths

There will be a pop-up bar beside the Great Bath from 12pm to 5pm on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 25 November to 18 December. Soak up the atmosphere around the steaming Great Bath while you sip a hot chocolate, mulled wine, sparkling wine or soft drink.

Family activity: Seasonal Saturnalia

The Romans celebrated the festival of Saturnalia in December. Join us at the Roman Baths to make a special decoration.

The Roman Baths Shop will stay open until 8pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 24 November to 10 December, giving shoppers more time to browse the selection of original gifts.

Christmas Market food stalls

The Pump Room Restaurant’s traditional ‘Stew in a Box’ and ‘Mac in Box’ chalets will return to Bath Christmas Market again this year. Look out for them in Abbey Church Yard beside the Pump Room from 24 November to 11 December.

Festive evening dining by candlelight

Feast on a delicious three-course meal, including dishes such as free-range roast turkey with apricot stuffing, and braised lamb shoulder with buttered mash. Finish off with a traditional Christmas pudding and brandy cream or try the apple tart tatin with cinnamon custard.

After two years away, the Pump Room’s New Year’s Eve ball returns for a celebration to remember.
