Work on high-quality homes in Bath which will enable adults with learning disabilities to live independently has taken a major step forward.
Bath & North East Somerset Council is delivering much-needed supported housing and has appointed a contractor and the start of initial ground works on the site in Englishcombe Lane.
The milestone signals the start of a flagship development offering local care for adults with learning disabilities and/or autism spectrum disorder, which will allow them to live independently in their own community, close to family and support networks.
The contractor, Stepnell Ltd, will be carrying out initial works to prepare the site for the main construction phase of the scheme that includes a mix of one, two and three-bedroom homes, all built to be accessible and adaptable for wheelchair users, and a communal hub for residents.
Councillor Alison Born, Cabinet Member for Adult Services, said: “Seeing work begin on site is an exciting and important moment for this much-needed development. These homes will make a real difference to people’s lives and shows our commitment to providing high-quality, local accommodation so people can remain close to family, friends and their support networks, avoiding the need to move away from the area.”
The development forms part of the council’s wider Homes programme, which is increasing the supply of supported and affordable housing while investing in communities and helping people to live healthier, more independent lives.
Councillor Matt McCabe, Cabinet Member for Built Environment, Housing and Sustainable Development, added: “The appointment of a contractor and start of works is a significant step forward. This development demonstrates how we are delivering sustainable growth that invests in people as well as places.
“By combining high-quality design, environmental enhancement and social value, Englishcombe Lane will not only meet a critical housing need, but also contribute to our wider ambition for inclusive economic growth and strong, resilient communities.”
The Englishcombe Lane scheme has already received national recognition for its innovative design, highlighting its role as a model for supported living that integrates residents with the wider community and natural environment.
Construction is due to start later in the year, with the council working closely with partners to ensure the scheme delivers long-term benefits for residents, the local community and the environment.
The contractor, Stephnell is planning a meeting for homeowners of nearby properties where they will outline measures that will be in place during the construction, including regular updates, community events access to an app and a direct email address for any questions. The first newsletter which includes details of the time and date of the event will be delivered to residents in the next few weeks.
