Bath & North East Somerset Council leader Councillor Kevin Guy and the Chair of the council, Councillor Karen Walker had the honour of meeting four Armed Forces veterans at a special visit.

Both councillors asked to meet the veterans, who live in Bath, in a housing with care scheme, after the veterans were unable to attend the Armed Forces Day flag raising ceremony in June.

They met (l-r) Patricia Hill, aged 97 a Veteran of Auxiliary Territorial Service in the British Army, Bernard Williams, 92 who undertook National Service in Malaya, Bill Hassey, 95 an RAF Veteran and Joan Rippingale, 91 a Veteran of the Women’s Royal Naval Service.

Councillor Kevin Guy, council leader said, “It was an enormous pleasure to meet Pat, Bernard, Bill and Joan. As Member Advocate for Armed Forces and Veterans I was privileged to chat to them and listen to their memories and the valuable roles they each played in the Armed Forces.”

Councillor Karen Walker added: ”Unfortunately none of the residents were able to attend the Armed Forces Flag Raising ceremony in June which together with Armed Forces Day recognises all those who serve and have served our country. Thank you to Walcot Court, which is run by the Methodist Homes Housing Association, for accommodating our visit.”

Bath & North East Somerset Council provides practical resources to aid present and former service personnel who find themselves homeless, in debt or in need of specialised medical care.
