Works to convert a signalised crossing in London Road East, Batheaston into a zebra crossing are set to start and will take up to two weeks.

The existing signalised crossing in London Road East has reached the end of its serviceable life, and following a local consultation, its conversion to a zebra crossing will better serve local needs and remove maintenance costs.

Temporary four-way traffic signals will be in place from 5 August for up to two weeks, with an overnight road closure needed towards the end of the works for highway resurfacing works. The resurfacing works will include high-friction surfacing at both approaches to the crossing and the resurfacing of nearby Fiveways Roundabout.

Councillor Manda Rigby, Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “Changing the London Road East/Stanbridge crossing to a zebra means pedestrians will always have priority over vehicles and will reduce ongoing maintenance costs.

“This is one of several zebra crossings introduced so far this year as we look to continually improve pedestrian safety and our highway infrastructure.”

A section of footway and the pedestrian refuge island will be resurfaced, signage removed or updated, and new bollards installed.

Advanced notices have been in place to inform motorists of the upcoming works.
