A message from Cllr Kevin Guy, Leader of Bath & North East Somerset Council

Firstly, we all need to stand shoulder-to-shoulder against racism and with our friends and neighbours who are most directly threatened by the hatred and disorder we have seen in our towns and cities, including Bristol - a city with which we have many ties - over the past week. Our communities are stronger than those who would want to divide us, and we fully support all those working to bring communities together in the face of attempts to inflame divisions.

I would like to acknowledge also the police officers and staff from other services who have been on the front line of dealing with the unacceptable violence and disorder. We support police, emergency workers and others protecting people in their communities.

Our democracy allows plenty of room for protest and expressing legitimate concerns, however this behaviour is neither and they have dealt with the shocking disturbances with courage and professionalism.

I am proud of our diverse and welcoming communities and am delighted that we have appointed Nicola Medin as a Ukrainian Youth Ambassador (pictured above with mentor Marian McNeir MBE and me) to support young Ukrainian nationals living in B&NES. This is another step in our commitment to support people who have been displaced by war. As part of our Friendship Agreement with the Ukrainian city of Oleksandriya, we also welcomed Bohdan Kolmakov – a 2022 world champion in parkour – to Bath last week. He has been progressing plans for several parkour events in Bath later this year in support of the Friends of Oleksandriya.

More good news with an announcement that Motul, a French company specialising in engine lubricants, will be the fourth business to move into No.1 Bath Quays. Motul will be setting up their first UK sales office, providing a boost to the local economy and validating our commitment to support and regenerate the city centre.

I am pleased to sign off with more congratulations for University of Bath-based athletes and their teammates and coaches for the fantastic Paris 2024 Olympic medal wins over the past week. Ben Proud took silver in the men’s 50m freestyle swimming and Becky Wilde won bronze in the women’s double sculls rowing.

Have a good weekend.
