A message from Cllr Sarah Warren, deputy leader of Bath & North East Somerset CouncilSo much has already been said about last weekend’s unforgettable scenes in Bath but it all bears repeating, with thanks to so many people, organisations and communities who helped make such great memories for the city. Firstly, I’d like to add my congratulations to Bath RFC for their historic Premiership win against Leicester Tigers on Saturday. Thanks go to the players, the club and the fans – there was a joyous atmosphere in the city on Sunday when so many turned out to watch the open top bus parade giving everyone the chance to see all three trophies. Thank you also to our own council teams, the police and the club who worked so hard in a relatively short space of time to make the parade happen. A huge thank you also to all our residents and businesses for their patience when events of this scale happen – including the two-night sold-out Robbie Williams gigs in front of the iconic Royal Crescent. The level of interest in the city as a destination and a crowd of some 15,000 people on each night of Robbie’s concerts was a significant boost for the local economy as a whole and we look forward to inviting other high-profile artists to our city. Thanks to a founding grant from the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority and development funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the council is now moving forward with development plans and designs for both the Fashion Museum and the public spaces around it. We are keen to seek ideas from you to help shape the museum’s future. This summer, a series of drop-in events are giving people a first look at early-stage designs for the museum and the reimagined public space around it. Our ambition is for the new museum to play a key part of the delivery of our Milsom Quarter Masterplan, which aims to transform this area into a vibrant destination for fashion, design, culture, and community life supported by changes to transport and movement in the city centre. You can find out more about the drop-in events on our newsroom. Anyone in the city this weekend will see artwork has gone up on Jolly’s. We are investing significantly in restoration of the building so it can continue to benefit future generations of Bath residents and visitors. It is a flagship building at the heart of the Milsom Quarter and it is exciting to see Morleys taking on the running of the store once the restoration work is complete. Finally, this week is Refugee Week and events have been taking place in our area to celebrate it. Our area has welcomed many refugees and displaced communities from around the world. Not only do refugees strengthen our economy and our cultural bonds, but they also help make B&NES the welcoming and inclusive area that it is. Have a great weekend. |
