Statement from B&NES Council leader on tourism taxes

In light of the joint letter I co-signed with the Leader of Cambridge City Council to Angela Rayner, calling for councils to be granted powers to introduce a tourism levy, I was naturally very interested to see media reports suggesting that these proposals may have been vetoed by the Treasury.

I am encouraged, however, that according to these reports the proposals appear to have found favour with Angela Rayner. What we now need though is a joined-up approach from government. As outlined in our letter, we are calling for a roundtable discussion between government and councils to explore further how we can promote sustainable tourism that is fair for local council taxpayers.

I am ready to meet with ministers and officials at any time or place to discuss this issue, and look forward to receiving a formal response to our joint letter.
