A message from Cllr Kevin Guy, Leader of Bath & North East Somerset CouncilAs a society, we have to draw a firm line between robust patriotism and anti-immigrant nationalism. Our national flag represents those innate values of welcoming inclusivity and seeing it being hijacked by those who wish to use it to foster hatred and foment division over the past week has been deeply distressing. Like many other authorities, we are now counting the cost of removing graffiti, stickers, and flags placed on public assets over the past week. It is a criminal offence to put non-approved markings on the highways and the police are actively investigating recent occurrences. The safety of everyone using our network is our top priority and any vandalism of signs designed to keep road users safe will not be tolerated. You can report a problem on our streets, parks or green spaces on our Fix My Street pages. Finally, I want to reiterate that I’m proud that Bath and North East Somerset is a welcoming and inclusive community, which stands strongly against racism, xenophobia and all forms of intolerance. With schools about to return next week I wanted to take the opportunity to reflect on a sensational summer across Bath & North East Somerset, which saw more than 190,000 people welcomed to 25 events with highlights including the Robbie Williams concerts at the Royal Crescent, Keynsham Music Festival and the Bath Rugby Victory Parade. Special thanks go to our communities for their patience and support during busy periods as we work to support the fantastic events our area attracts. Cooperation from residents helps make these events happen and enrich the amazing culture of our city and towns. There’s much more to come this autumn and winter. A standout event for September is the Jane Austen Festival 250th celebrations next month which include a Regency wedding ceremony for the winners of our unique competition. Also please look out for the annual Heritage Open Days from 12 to 21 September. The national scheme gives everyone a rare opportunity to explore some of the area’s most fascinating buildings, landscapes, and stories — all completely free. Have a good weekend. |
