Bath & North East Somerset Council has launched a new British Sign Language (BSL) video relay service, making it easier than ever for deaf residents to access support.
The SignVideo service allows BSL users to contact Council Connect for everyday enquiries such as waste collection, road issues, and library services without needing a family member or friend to interpret.
Residents can access the service via the council’s the contact us page, download the SignVideo app or use the Sign Video Directory. With just one click, a qualified BSL interpreter appears instantly to relay the conversation with council staff.
The service is available during Council Connect’s opening hours, Monday to Thursday, 8:30am to 5:00pm, and Friday 8:30am to 4:30pm.
To further improve accessibility, the council has also launched a series of video guides for its three main libraries, the Mobile Library, and Bath Housing Welfare and Advice Services. These guides show what to expect on arrival, how to find the venues and available facilities and can be viewed on the Virtual Library.
Councillor Manda Rigby, Cabinet Member for Communications and Community, said: “SignVideo is a game-changer for BSL users who want to access council services on demand. It empowers them to engage with us independently and confidently. This is a key step in our commitment to making council services inclusive and accessible to all.”
BSL users visiting the Roman Baths can also enjoy BSL and descriptive audio tours, tactile models, and autism-friendly resources.
The library video guides were supported by public funding from Arts Council England, with help from Libraries Connected.
