Climate emergency impacts, support for Ukraine and World Cup kick off

This week I took the opportunity to watch the eye-opening People’s Emergency Briefing – and I would strongly encourage you to see it if you can. The film makes clear the very real impacts of climate and nature breakdown on our health, food systems, national security and economy.

But importantly, it also carries a message of hope: there is still time to act.

As a council, we have been taking action locally and you can find out more about the progress we’re making on our website. However, the briefing is a reminder that there is more to do – and less time than we might think to do it. If you’re interested, you can find a screening near you here: Find a screening near you.

Yesterday, alongside Councillor Paul Roper, I met Zhenya Shkil, Chair of the Friends of Oleksandriya (pictured). B&NES has had a friendship agreement with the Ukrainian city since 2023. Zhenya updated us about a new veterans’ rehabilitation centre being built there. It was inspiring to hear how volunteers from our area are preparing to support the build, and how local people here in Bath and North East Somerset can continue to strengthen this important friendship.

Many of us will be enjoying the FIFA 2026 World Cup kicking off. There’s a real opportunity to celebrate the power of sport to bring people together. Closer to home, we’ve recently invested £25,000 in installing new goalposts in nine parks across Bath and North East Somerset. We hope this encourages more people – particularly young people – to get out, get active, and enjoy the game.

But we also know that major sporting events can have a more serious side. Sadly, incidents of domestic abuse can increase during tournaments. That’s why we’re supporting an Avon and Somerset Police campaign to raise awareness and ensure help is available for anyone who needs it.

Councillor Sarah Warren deputy council leader, will share these updates over the next couple of weeks while I am on leave,

Have a good weekend.

Councillor Kevin Guy,
Leader of Bath & North East Somerset Council

Debate Not Hate

Bath & North East Somerset Council has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring councillors and staff can carry out their roles safely, without fear of abuse or intimidation, as part of its work linked to the national Debate not Hate campaign.

The Debate Not Hate campaign tackles the abuse and intimidation of elected politicians and promotes civil public discourse. Spearheaded by the Local Government Association (LGA) and supported by The Jo Cox Foundation, it seeks to protect local democracy and ensure councillors can represent their communities without fear of harassment. Next Tuesday (June 16) marks the tenth anniversary of the murder of MP Jo Cox whose message was ‘we have more in common than that which divides us’.

In March 2024, Council passed a motion that agreed a zero-tolerance approach to abuse of councillors and officers. The full debate can be watched on our YouTube channel.

National Highways and Transport Public Satisfaction survey

Please keep an eye on what comes through your letter box this week, as you may be one of the 3,300 randomly selected households to receive the National Highways and Transport Public Satisfaction survey. This is a national survey in which hundreds of councils take part. It asks for your views on things like the condition of our roads and footpaths to the quality of cycling facilities.

In last year’s survey the speed and quality of response from council staff was ranked the best in the country, with Bath’s quick and easy Park & Ride service ranking second for the second year in a row. Find out more about last year’s result on our Newsroom: https://newsroom.bathnes.gov.uk/news/thousands-residents-receive-highways-transport-survey

A safer, calmer environment outside Newbridge Primary School

Families at Newbridge Primary School are now enjoying safer, calmer spaces during school pick-up and drop-off following the launch of our second School Street. Stewards manage temporary barriers to ensure essential access is still available for those who need it.

Newbridge’s School Street launched on Monday, building on the success of our first School Street outside St Stephen’s Primary School and forms part of our wider work to support active travel and improve safety outside schools.

More School Streets will be introduced across the area this summer as we continue working closely with schools, families and the local community.
