A message from Cllr Kevin Guy, Leader of Bath & North East Somerset Council
This time of year you will notice an increase in resurfacing work on our highways – we have 36 schemes planned over the coming spring and summer months and you can find out where they are scheduled on the council’s website. When they are all done, we will have resurfaced the equivalent of 352 tennis courts.
Maintaining our network is a core council service, last month alone we completed ten highways schemes and repaired 501 potholes. You can report highway issues on Fix My Street which is an easy and quick way to alert our teams and resulted in 1,332 reports dealt with last year.
As well as focusing on delivering excellent services we also want to encourage a thriving local economy and we use the powers we have to support business across the district. Last year we had 17 lettings in our council-owned properties, all of which bring residents and visitors to our high streets and generate income for council services.
However, where we are not the landlord our ability to step in and help businesses is more limited. A recent example is the much-loved Moles which closed due to its rising costs. The council received an application to make it an asset of community value. Making a property an asset of community value means if it comes up for sale communities are given time to put together a bid to buy it. Unfortunately, because the application we received for Moles to be made an asset of community value didn’t meet the criteria (which are set out in national legislation), it wasn’t successful. However, we have informed the nominating body that we remain open to receive a new application.
Yesterday Eid al-Fitr began for millions of Muslims around the world – Eid Mubarak! to everyone celebrating.
Have a good weekend.
