A message from Cllr Kevin Guy, Leader of Bath & North East Somerset CouncilWe are all aware that housing affordability in Bath & North East Somerset is a significant problem. The area is consistently ranked among the least affordable in the UK so high house prices relative to earnings is a real issue for many. Addressing this is a priority for the council and my ambition is to see the right homes in the right places with good transport options and sustainable growth leading to the creation of more and better jobs. So this autumn, through consultation, we will be asking for your views on how Bath & North East Somerset will look over the next 15 to 20 years – focusing on housing, areas of employment growth and how we travel into and around our city and surrounds. A Local Plan Options document is being prepared to go before the council’s cabinet in the next couple of weeks and if agreed, the options would then be consulted on. It is a vital first step towards a final Local Plan, which will establish the planning framework for Bath and North East Somerset up to 2042. Through consultation we will also be asking for your views on how we plan to travel into and get around the city so the right transport links and infrastructure are in place to support sustainable, well-connected neighbourhoods. Please look out on our social media channels, in this newsletter and on our newsroom for details. Earlier this summer we highlighted concerns about the current condition of the empty pond in Royal Victoria Park which I know many people have been in touch about. The pond is in a Grade I listed heritage park and is a cherished space for residents and visitors alike. Some time ago Wessex Water had to disconnect the water supply due to damaged pipework which caused flooding in nearby properties. The lack of a reliable water source and ongoing silt build-up have continued to affect water levels which were compounded by a long hot dry summer resulting in an empty pond. We share your concerns and I want to reassure you that we are actively working with Wessex Water to find a solution. This weekend and into in next week Bath prepares to welcome hundreds of visitors for the 24th annual Jane Austen Festival, marking the 250th anniversary of the author’s birth. Events like this remind us why Bath is such a special place. The festival is not only a tribute to Austen’s literary legacy but also a celebration of Bath’s unique cultural identity. And for one lucky couple the city and the festival will hold a special place in their hearts. Lydia and Joe won our competition for a Regency-style wedding renewal ceremony in Parade Gardens conducted by our registration services. I wish them the very best. Have a great weekend. |
