A message from Cllr Kevin Guy, Leader of Bath & North East Somerset CouncilThis week we published a report setting out our plans for the next steps in 11 proposed Liveable Neighbourhoods, which are the result of long-term ongoing engagement with residents and ward councillors to create environments where it is easier, safer, healthier, and more attractive to walk, wheel and cycle. Currently 42 percent of all journeys in Bath are under 3km in private vehicles so we want the outcomes of all Liveable Neighbourhood schemes to help reduce the need for such short car journeys by creating the choice of healthier, safer active travel routes. If we are successful and can create attractive, safe alternatives then Liveable Neighbourhoods would also support the council’s wider policies to tackle the climate emergency. Tomorrow our full business case for the Liveable Neighbourhood schemes is going to the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority where we are seeking the funds required to move ahead on these proposals. The programme would run over two years and it would include further consultation on detailed design and work with communities. We will update you on the decision and on our next steps. Thank you to everyone who has taken part in the Sydney Road, at its junction with New Sydney Place, Experimental Traffic Regulation Order consultation which closes on 3 October. All the consultation feedback alongside monitoring data and our wider council policy will be thoroughly considered before a decision is made whether to remove the scheme or make it permanent following the trial. Across our area there are many carers who are all too often unsung heroes. So I want to take this opportunity to highlight a great piece of work which we launched recently and which helps address the support carers need. Over the past year the council has worked with hundreds of local adult carers to co-produce a carers strategy which identifies what is and isn’t working for carers, and how to make support for them as effective as possible. You can find out more about it on our newsroom and if you need support please contact The Carers' Centre on 0800 0388 885. Saturday marks the United Nations International Day of Peace, which was established in 1981. The United Nations explains that Peace Day provides humanity to commit to Peace above all differences and contribute to building a Culture of Peace. We are flying the United Nations Flag for Peace Day above The Guildhall. Have a good weekend. |
