A message from Cllr Kevin Guy, Leader of Bath & North East Somerset CouncilOne of the issues that residents and businesses raise with me regularly is how we keep our tourist areas vibrant and inviting, while not putting all the burden on our council taxpayers. Much has been reported in the media this week about a tourism levy and we are getting traction in getting the powers to raise a tourist levy. I, together with the leader of Cambridge City Council, sent in a co-signed letter to Angela Rayner which has given added impetus to getting the power to levy a fair and proportionate sum in the way many European cities already do. What we need is a joined-up approach from government. As outlined in our letter, we are calling for a roundtable discussion between government and councils to explore further how we can promote sustainable tourism that is fair for local council taxpayers. Last Thursday full council resolved to support the powers to raise a visitor charge and I now look forward to receiving a formal response to our joint letter. I will update you further on any future progress towards fairness. I am also delighted to let you know that we are taking bold action to ensure developers building in Bath & North East Somerset invest in local community facilities. We have launched a six-week consultation in advance of the Local Plan Options consultation in the autumn. The proposals seek increased financial contributions from developers, which could provide home to school transport, GP surgeries, Early Years provision and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) provision. You can find out more on our newsroom and take part in the consultation. I am delighted to report that our Keynsham Recycling Hub won the Building Project of the Year (over £5m) award at the Constructing Excellence South West (CESW) Awards recently. The project, which was a significant investment by the council, was recognised for its innovative approach to reuse and recycling and the positive impact it has had – well done to everyone involved. We have a truly great modern sustainable facility which we can be rightfully proud of. We look forward this weekend to Bath Pride which celebrates diversity, inclusion and community spirit here in Bath. A short parade will begin and end at Sydney Gardens with a joyful celebration which is accessible for all. Thanks go to the organisers and also to residents, with this event coming just a couple of weeks after the busy carnival and the earlier Bath RFC celebratory parade. Finally on behalf of the council I want to wish the Lionesses good luck for the Euro 2025 final on Sunday – the squad is an inspiration to so many and a great example of teamwork, Have a great weekend. |
