Global recognition for Roman Baths and action on Royal Victoria Park pond I was away last week and was delighted to return to some fantastic news that puts Bath and North East Somerset firmly on the global stage. The Roman Baths has been named one of the very best visitor attractions in the world, ranking in the top one per cent globally and fourth in the UK in the Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Best of the Best Awards for 2026. This recognition is based entirely on reviews from visitors, which makes it especially meaningful. It reflects not only the unique history and beauty of the Roman Baths itself, but also the dedication of the team who bring it to life for nearly a million visitors each year. For us as residents, this is something to be proud of. The Roman Baths is at the heart of our UNESCO World Heritage city and plays a vital role in supporting our local economy. Attractions like this bring people into Bath, supporting jobs, businesses and investment right across our communities. Many of you have told us how important the ponds at Bath’s Royal Victoria Park are to you. They are a focal point for families, walkers and wildlife, and part of what makes the park such a special place. I know how disappointing it has been to see water levels fall so low in recent years. The reason for this is not straight forward and one that has been made more difficult by the effects of climate change and the loss of the historic spring water supply. I want to reassure you that we are taking steps with interim work to help bring water levels back up while we work towards a sustainable long-term solution. Our ambition goes beyond simply restoring water levels. This is an opportunity to think more broadly about the future of the ponds, how they support nature and biodiversity, and how they can be enjoyed by future generations. We will involve residents in shaping that long-term vision, so the park continues to reflect what matters to our community. Being able to actively enjoy our parks and beautiful green spaces is great for both good physical and mental wellbeing but not everyone has the confidence to do this. In the Somer Valley we have a fantastic project that helps anyone who needs a little more encouragement to get out cycling, wheeling or walking. There are arrange of courses and events available and we’ve had some great feedback from people who have taken up support from The Active Way. Finally, this weekend supported by the council and Bath Business Improvement District, the city welcomes the annual spring fair in Milsom Street which always generates a great buzz and vibrant atmosphere with a great variety of stalls, street food and live music and is well worth a visit Have a good weekend.
