Hot weather, half term and the history of Pride Month

It’s been a challenging week for many people in this heatwave, but I hope families whose children are on half-term holidays have still been able to enjoy your time together. It looks like it’s set to cool down a bit, but do keep these NHS tips on how to cope in hot weather handy if temperatures rise again.

There’s still plenty happening in our area for families until the end of the weekend, including the interactive Mission Floralia trail at the Roman Baths and the hands-on Discover Norman Ackroyd exhibition at Victoria Art Gallery.

When schools go back in June, we’ll be introducing more School Streets to make school runs safer and calmer at drop-off and pick-up times. Watch our new video about the first School Street at St Stephen's Primary School launched last week.

Pride Month begins on Monday 1 June and celebrates LGBTQ+ people and their history. Although activism and support from others has led to progress, the challenge of being included remains for many LGBTQ+ people. It’s up to us all to help create environments where people can be themselves.

There are ways for you to get involved in Pride locally. Our Bath Record Office has a display of the GayWest archive, a historical resource about the LGBTQ+ community in Bath from 1974 to 2020 that was deposited with us in 2023. You can also drop into any of our main libraries and discover our vibrant display of recommended reads. In August, Bath Pride is returning with a colourful parade through the city, followed by a community festival and is open to everyone.

Have a good weekend.

Councillor Kevin Guy,
Leader of Bath & North East Somerset Council

Water safety

It may be inviting to cool off in the water as it's still warm outside. However, it's vital to take care in and around the water, keep an eye on little children and keep pets under control. Follow these tips to stay safe:

📞 If someone falls in, PHONE, FLOAT, THROW. Call 999, tell them to float to live, and throw them something that floats.

💧 If you fall in, float to live. Spread your arms and legs out and lie on your back, control your breathing.

❌ Do not enter the water to rescue someone or an animal; leave it to the emergency services.

Every sip counts

As we get older, our sense of thirst decreases, our kidneys do not work as well and certain conditions, such as dementia and acute illness increase the likelihood of becoming dehydrated.
