People are being asked for their views on improving air quality, reducing harmful pollution and improving health across Bath and North East Somerset.
Bath & North East Somerset Council is launching a six-week consultation from 12 May, giving people the opportunity to help shape its Clean Air Strategy and have their say on new local targets to improve air quality and reduce harmful pollution.
Air pollution is one of the biggest environmental risks to public health. It can affect everyone, but it has the greatest impact on children, older people and those with heart or lung conditions. There is also growing evidence that poorer communities are more likely to be exposed to polluted air.
Currently, air quality in the district meets national standards, but the council is aiming to go further. Evidence shows there is no safe level of air pollution, and even low levels can affect people’s health.
The emerging strategy aims to improve health by reducing pollution levels across the whole district and outlines the proposed actions. The council is keen to hear from all residents, visitors and businesses, including those most affected by air pollution, such as families with young children, the elderly and those with existing health conditions.
Councillor Sarah Warren, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Sustainable Bath and North East Somerset, said:
“Clean air is essential for good health - and there is no safe level of pollution.
“While we have already made progress, we want to go further to protect our communities, especially those most vulnerable to the effects of poor air quality.
“This strategy is about improving people’s lives - helping children grow up healthier, supporting those with existing conditions, and tackling unfair differences in air quality across our area.
“We want to hear from as many people as possible, so we can shape a strategy that works for everyone.”
