A message from Cllr Kevin Guy, Leader of Bath & North East Somerset Council

We have many great partnerships across Bath and North East Somerset and today I had the chance to catch up with student volunteers on a fantastic campaign we support each year helping students on handling their waste and recycling as they prepare to leave Bath for the summer.

Together with the Student Community Partnership our officers are out and about knocking on around 3,000 doors in residential areas of Bath to give advice as part of the Student Moving Out Campaign. It is run in conjunction with the British Heart Foundation’s annual Pack for Good Campaign – you may have seen red donation banks which have been installed at temporary sites around the city, enabling students and other residents to donate unwanted items to the charity.

Thousands of pounds are raised each year for the charity and items are recycled – so a big thank you to all the students volunteers and the partnership whose members include the University of Bath, Bath Spa University, Bath College and their students’ unions, Norland College and the council. Look out for a BBC Points West report on the great work that’s being done.

Prospective students and their families will be exploring the city during the University of Bath open days on June 13 and 14, the same days as Robbie Williams’ performances at the Royal Crescent - meaning that the city is expected to be buzzing over that weekend. It will be a great weekend for our local economy and we are looking forward to welcoming Robbie to the city.

We are also encouraging visitors to plan ahead and reminding everyone about Bath’s three Park & Ride services, which have recently been extended later into the evening and now run until 11:30pm Monday to Saturday.

Our Park and Ride services were highlighted this week at our cabinet meeting as part of an excellent presentation updating cabinet on the council’s Highways Service. You can watch the presentation and find out how we keep or network moving, make our roads safer, improve air quality, invest in our roads and get children to school on our  Youtube channel.

Tonight we meet for full council and will appoint a new chair – I want to pass on my thanks and appreciation to our outgoing chair Councillor Karen Walker. You can watch the council meeting which starts at 6.30pm.

Have a great weekend.
