A message from Cllr Kevin Guy, Leader of Bath & North East Somerset Council
Hello,
Against the background of the Covid 19 pandemic, and in the context of rising levels of need, the council’s Children’s Services has this week been recognised for the way it remains focused on the most vulnerable members of our community.
An Ofsted inspection has judged our Children’s Services as delivering good services to children, young people and families. Inspectors acknowledged the council’s strong commitment to achieving the best outcomes for children and families.
I want to thank all our teams and partners who work together to make a positive impact on the lives of our children, young people and families. And I want to take the opportunity to thank the many foster carers who do an amazing job working with us to help keep children safe. We are always in need of more foster carers, whether you are a family, single or a couple please get in touch with us to find out more about the many different ways you can foster in Bath & North East Somerset.
Many young families learned this week about the primary school their child will be going to in September. Starting school is such a big moment and I’m pleased that once again we have enabled 99 per cent of the applications we received to get one of their overall preferences with 97 per cent of families getting their first preference of primary school.
Over the Easter weekend it was great to see so many people out enjoying the good weather, the restaurants, bars, shops and attractions in our wonderful city and towns.
We are working hard to encourage more businesses back into Bath, Keynsham, Midsomer Norton and Radstock after two very challenging years. Within our own property portfolio we are seeing a strong demand for new properties in Bath from national and high-end independent retailers and we are committed to bring vacant units back into use. The most recent figures show 32 new lettings with a further 16 properties under offer – this is very encouraging and we will continue to push to get more business back in Bath. Businesses looking for support can get in touch with our team at Invest in Bath.
Finally, a reminder to residents who want to hold a street party on the fast-approaching Queen’s Platinum Jubilee weekend – you have until tomorrow (April 22) to apply to the council for a road closure.
Have a good weekend.

Current guidance for coronavirus
Free testing for Covid-19 has now ended for most people. However, you may still be able to get free rapid lateral flow tests if you work for the NHS or in social care, if you are going into hospital, or you’re at high risk of getting seriously ill from Covid-19.
From this month, care home residents, people aged 75+, and those with a weakened immune system aged 12+ will be invited to get a spring Covid-19 booster. The NHS will contact you and invite you to book your spring booster when it’s due.
Covid-19 is still with us, so it's important we all consider how we can continue stay safe and help prevent the spread of coronavirus. |

Vaccination clinics
There's still time to grab your first, second or booster doses at the following upcoming clinics.
Bath City Football Club, Twerton
- Wednesday 4 May, 11am-6pm
- Wednesday 18 May, 11am-6pm
Keynsham Scout Hut, Ashton Way, Keynsham, BS31 2UF
- Thursday 21 April, 10am-6pm
All these clinics will offer
- First and second doses for people aged over 12 years old
- Boosters for people aged 16 years old and over, plus at-risk children aged over 12 years old
- Spring boosters for people aged 75 years old and over, plus people aged over 12 years old with a weakened immune system
- Additional primary doses for people with a severely weakened immune system aged over 12 years old
If you’ve had a positive Covid-19 test, you need to wait before getting any dose of the vaccine. You need to wait:
- 4 weeks, or 28 days if you're aged 18+ and or if you're an at risk 12-17 year old
- 12 weeks, or 84 days if you're aged 12-17
This starts from the date you had symptoms, or the date of the positive test if you did not have any symptoms.
If you or your child have had symptoms of COVID-19, but have not had a test, you should wait until your symptoms are better to get a COVID-19 vaccine. You can talk to a healthcare professional at the site about this.
You can book your vaccination appointment online; you need to be registered with a GP (or call 119) to book online. Or you can visit a vaccination walk-in clinic; no need to book or be registered with a GP. To find one near you, go to the NHS website.
If you are planning to attend a walk-in clinic, please check the 'grab a jab' website to make sure the site is open that day.
If you need a translator, have difficulties communicating or hearing, or are a British Sign Language (BSL) user, use textphone 18001 119 or the NHS 119 BSL interpreter service |
