Let's look after each other. Covid hasn't gone away.

Coronavirus update 12 May 2022

A message from Cllr Kevin Guy, Leader of Bath & North East Somerset Council

The new Bath World Heritage Centre opened this week, and public realm work was completed to much-improve the pavement area in York Street and Swallow Street ‒ both enhancing our city. Supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the World Heritage Centre is expected to attract 100,000 visitors per year once established, providing yet another boost to our economy.

Last week I reported on our ambitious plans to revitalise the north of Bath city centre around Milsom Street with our Milsom Quarter Masterplan consultation. It includes proposals to provide 180 new homes, relocate our Fashion Museum, and attract creative industries. We have now moved forward with proposals to acquire a leasehold property in Bath’s Milson Quarter for a new museum using grant funding secured from the West of England Joint Committee. These recommendations are set out in a Single Member Decision report. The Fashion Museum’s final opening day at the Assembly Rooms will be Sunday 30 October 2022, before the collection moves to temporary accommodation.

We’re delivering some big projects and this week we announced the next stage of our Liveable Neighbourhoods Programme working with communities from 15 priority areas. This is part of our bigger picture for our Journey to Net Zero by 2030. Over the next three months we are hosting a series of workshops with communities giving people who live, work or regularly visit the areas the time to discuss how their neighbourhood streets can be improved so that together we create safer, healthier spaces with fair access to the road space for all. As part of the Liveable Neighbourhoods Programme, we are currently consulting on seven residents parking zones.

The Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay was confirmed this week to visit Bath during its final journey through England this summer. It will arrive in the city on the morning of July 5 and travel from the Royal Crescent to the Roman Baths, before moving on to Bristol and South Gloucestershire. I’ve no doubt it will receive a really warm welcome from the city and we hope many people will turn out to watch the Batonbearers along the route. Community Batonbearers, like Ed and Lois Jackson, who were nominated for setting up Millimetres 2 Mountains, have been selected for their remarkable contributions to our communities.

The Mental Health Foundation has highlighted that one in four adults feel lonely some or all of the time and that can put us at risk of mental health problems. During Mental Health Awareness Week the foundation and local services have been raising awareness of the impact of loneliness on our mental health and the practical steps we can take to address it. Take a look at the Mental Health Foundation pages and local support is available from Bath Mind.

Our local community and council response to the Homes for Ukraine scheme has also shown the huge generosity and strength within our local area. So far our area has welcomed under the Homes for Ukraine scheme 70 people, 43 adults and 27 children to 32 sponsor houses. My thanks go to everyone who has made these projects happen.

Have a good weekend.

Covid-19 update

We are no longer be publishing the Covid-19 update as the government moves to the next phase of managing the pandemic. However, you can find the latest Government data on coronavirus here.

Coronavirus guidance

Covid-19 is still with us, so it's important we all consider how we can continue stay safe and help prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Free testing for Covid-19 has now ended for most people. However, you may still be able to get free rapid lateral flow tests if you work for the NHS or in social care, if you are going into hospital, or you’re at high risk of getting seriously ill from Covid-19.

If you symptoms of a respiratory infection including Covid-19, here is what you should do.

Boosters and vaccinations

Not sure what vaccinations you and your family members should have received? To find out the latest information on which doses are available for each age group, visit the BSW CCG website and click on the question 'Am I eligible for a booster vaccine?'.

Those aged 75 or over, or those aged 12 and over who have a weakened immune system, should not wait for a NHS letter, instead they should go ahead and arrange their spring booster, if there has been 182 days (6 months) since their last booster.

Covid-19 vaccinations can also be booked for children aged 5-11 through the National Booking System. There are more clinics being added to the NBS each day with availability currently up until May half term.

Upcoming clinics

There's still time to grab your first, second or booster doses at the following clinics this month:
  • Saturday 21 May, Keynsham Scout Hut, Ashton Way (10-6pm)
  • Thursday 26 May, Bath City FC, Twerton Park (11-6pm)
  • Thursday 26 May, Salvation Army, Green Park, Bath (11-6pm)
These clinics will offer
  • First and second doses for 12-years-old in Year 8 and above
  • Boosters for people aged 16 years old and over, plus at-risk children aged over 12 years old
  • Spring boosters for people aged 75 years old and over, plus people aged over 12 years old with a weakened immune system
  • Additional primary doses for people with a severely weakened immune system aged over 12 years old
If you’ve had a positive Covid-19 test, you need to wait before getting any dose of the vaccine. You need to wait:
  • 4 weeks, or 28 days if you're aged 18+ and or if you're an at risk 12-17 year old
  • 12 weeks, or 84 days if you're aged 12-17
This starts from the date you had symptoms, or the date of the positive test if you did not have any symptoms.

If you or your child have had symptoms of Covid-19, but have not had a test, you should wait until your symptoms are better to get a Covid-19 vaccine. You can talk to a healthcare professional at the site about this.

Don't forget, you can still 'grab a cab' to your planned vaccination appointment. The vaccination must be pre-booked and evidence of the appointment must be shown to the taxi driver. Evidence can include a screen shot on a mobile phone or a tablet, or print out.

You can book your vaccination appointment online; you need to be registered with a GP (or call 119) to book online. Or you can visit a vaccination walk-in clinic; no need to book or be registered with a GP. To find one near you, go to the NHS website.

If you are planning to attend a walk-in clinic, please check the 'grab a jab' website to make sure the site is open that day.

If you need a translator, have difficulties communicating or hearing, or are a British Sign Language (BSL) user, use textphone 18001 119 or the NHS 119 BSL interpreter service
