Let's look after each other. Covid hasn't gone away.

Coronavirus update 31 March 2022

A message from Cllr Kevin Guy, Leader of Bath & North East Somerset Council

Hello,

From tomorrow we move into the next phase of the pandemic, which at a national level aims to manage Covid-19 like other respiratory illnesses, while also protecting people most vulnerable to Covid.

Covid-19 hasn’t gone away and for many it still poses a risk, particularly with case rates and hospitalisations on the rise. We all need to live with Covid safely, which means staying away from others if you have any symptoms of a respiratory illness, including Covid.

Vaccination remains the best way to protect us all from severe disease and hospitalisation due to Covid infection. If you have not yet come forward for your primary or booster, please do ‒ it's never too late.

The terrible events in Ukraine have seen an immediate response from both our local community and the council. At time of writing, around 100 Ukrainian refugees have been matched with local sponsors under the government’s Homes to Ukraine scheme. My thanks go to residents who have offered their homes, and to everyone involved so far, including local partners such as Julian House and Bath Welcomes Refugees.

We held full council last week where a cross-party motion offered full support and solidarity with Ukraine. Council also received an update on our council-owned housing company, Aequus, which was set up to provide affordable homes while helping to finance key frontline services. It has returned a total of £7.9m to the council over the past five years and so far delivered more than 140 much-needed new homes.

Among those homes are two, which this week were formally acquired by the council for shared ownership. The two semi-detached energy-efficient houses in Sladebrook Road are part of the excellent St Joseph’s Court development of nine Aequus houses.

Seven social rented homes are currently under construction at 117 Newbridge Hill in Bath and full planning consent has been secured for 176 units, including 44 affordable homes at Midland Road in Bath.

Tonight we are holding a virtual 'informal' Special meeting to consider the West of England Combined Authority draft Spatial Development Strategy (SDS). This is a plan that will set out areas for housing, employment and infrastructure in our region over the next 20 years. Our meeting tonight gives us the opportunity to consider the key priorities for the SDS, which will go before the West of England Combined Authority Committee on Friday 8 April.

Following this meeting we are holding our cabinet meeting from March 17, which had to be postponed due to Covid. You can watch both meetings on our Youtube channel.

Saturday sees the start of Ramadan and we send our warmest wishes for peace, health and happiness to all those marking Ramadan.

Have a good weekend.

These are the latest Covid case figures for B&NES – please play your part to drive the number down.

From next week, we will no longer be publishing the Covid-19 update as the government moves to the next phase of managing the pandemic.

Covid-19 update

Latest changes from 1 April

From 1 April, free testing for Covid-19 will end for most people. You may still be able to get free rapid lateral flow tests if you work for the NHS or in social care, if you are going into hospital, or you’re at high risk of getting seriously ill from Covid-19.

From this month, care home residents, people aged 75+, and those with a weakened immune system aged 12+ will be invited to get a spring Covid-19 booster. The NHS will contact you and invite you to book your spring booster when it’s due.

Covid-19 is still with us, so it's important we all consider how we can continue stay safe and help prevent the spread of coronavirus.
