Support for the Armed Forces community has been marked in Bath with the raising of the Armed Forces flag.

Bath & North East Somerset Council raised the flag in Parade Gardens yesterday [June 23] ahead of national Armed Forces Day on Saturday, June 28.

Armed Forces Day is the culmination of a week of celebrations when the public show their support and appreciation for the Armed Forces community and is a boost for serving personnel, veterans and their families.

The flag raising ceremony was attended by Councillor Liz Hardman, council Chair, the Mayor of Bath, Councillor Professor Bharat Pankhania and Councillor Kevin Guy, council Leader.

The council is a signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring that those who serve or have served, and their families, are treated fairly and not disadvantaged by their service.

Councillor Liz Hardman said: “I am proud to stand together in support of our Armed Forces community. The raising of the flag is an important opportunity to show recognition and gratitude for all the Armed Forces do. This year is particularly special with the recent celebrations of the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

“Thank you to all the Armed Forces personnel for the huge personal sacrifices you have made to protect the UK and its interests, working tirelessly to defend us all and protect lives. It is an honour to recognise your achievements and for the council to continue its commitment to you through the Armed Forces Covenant.”

The council provides practical resources to aid present and former service personnel who find themselves homeless, in debt or in need of specialised medical care as part of the Armed Forces Covenant.
