A section of Stall Street in front of the Roman Baths is being closed to vehicles while investigative and remedial work is undertaken in the vault below.
Stall Street is already closed to vehicles from 10am to 6pm. The current closure, which starts tomorrow (Friday June 5), extends to vehicles using Stall Street from 6pm to 10am meaning a 24-hour closure. Barriers will be in place at the junction with Bath Street and York Street.
Pedestrian access remains at all times including to the entrance of the Roman Baths.
Councillor Paul Roper, Cabinet Member for Economic and Cultural Sustainable Development, said: “Engineers are carrying out investigative and remedial work on our vaults below street level. The Roman Baths are not affected but safety is our number one priority and as a result, we have taken a precautionary measure to close off an area in Stall Street to vehicles while this work is under way.
“We don’t know how long the work will take. It is being carried out below ground so people won’t see a lot of activity such as the road being dug up. We apologise for the inconvenience the closure may cause. Our highways officers are writing to businesses and residents to update them and provide advice.”
Until the investigative work is carried out the council us unable to say how long the closure will last for. Businesses and residents have been contacted. Queries should be directed to Council Connect 01225 394041 or email council_connect@bathnes.gov.uk
Planned works from 9 June to replace temporary hostile vehicle mitigation measures on Beau Street with a permanent solution will still go ahead as are part of the city centre security scheme.
