A message from Cllr Sarah Warren, deputy leader of Bath & North East Somerset CouncilI am stepping in over the next few weeks while Councillor Guy is away and want to begin with the very welcome news the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority received yesterday, on three-quarters of a billion secured for transport investment in our region. This investment marks a turning point for sustainable transport for Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. It is a huge opportunity to deliver a cleaner, greener and more connected future and to make it easier for people to choose public transport, walking and cycling. I look forward to working with the WECA Mayor Helen Godwin and our regional partners to progress options such as mass transit and electrifying our bus fleet to help us tackle congestion, achieve our net zero targets and improve people’s lives. While the new funding means we can look to the future I want to highlight a recent decision which will not only make a direct difference to care leavers now but also demonstrates great example of how we can work together to support young people for better outcomes. Young people leaving care, aged up to 25, will soon be able to travel free on buses in the wider region, as a result of funding secured by the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority and North Somerset Council. This direct support removes a barrier for some of our most vulnerable young people and supports Bath & North East Somerset Council’s commitment to getting services right for care experienced young people in addition to the council making leaving care a protected characteristic and signing up to the Care Leaver Covenant. Finally, well done to our events team who have been working with organisers the new Brickfields Park parkrun (BPp) which already has around 330 runners and walkers each week and approximately 30 volunteers. Good luck to Bath Rugby Club for their game tomorrow night as they home in on securing their first Premiership title in nearly 30 years – and don’t forget if you are going to the game our Park & Ride service has been extended until 11.30pm from Monday to Saturday. Have a great weekend. |
