Bath & North East Somerset Council is set to take an important next step towards delivering hundreds of new affordable homes at Bath Western Riverside.

Plans to be considered by the council’s Cabinet on July 2 would move the project forward, including progressing the funding and land agreements needed to unlock the next phase of development.

If approved, the proposals would help bring forward a significant number of new homes on the site over time, including more than 300 affordable homes as part of the 1,000 homes planned across the site.

Bath Western Riverside is one of the city’s most important regeneration sites, spanning land owned by both the council and Berkeley Homes. Work to prepare the site is already well underway, including major remediation and enabling works supported by £18.2 million of Homes England grant funding secured by the council.

This work has made it possible to start planning for the next stage of development on the complex brownfield site in the heart of the city.

Councillor Matt McCabe, Cabinet Member for Built Environment, Housing and Sustainable Development, said: “We know we need to do more to deliver genuinely affordable homes for local people and this is an important step in that direction.

“These proposals would allow us to work more closely with our neighbouring developer to bring forward more affordable homes and increase the overall proportion across the site.

“While there is still a long way to go and decisions still to be made, taking a more active role in how the site is developed would help us accelerate delivery and make the most of this opportunity for Bath.”

The project forms part of the council’s wider plans to deliver more than 400 affordable homes on council-owned land in central Bath, with construction expected to begin on some sites during this financial year.

Subject to approvals and funding, the agreements will allow the council to progress to the next phase of planning and delivery on the site, maintaining momentum on one of its key regeneration priorities.
